Loie Hollowell

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1983

Born in 1983, North Carolina, Hollowell now lives and works in Queens, NY. Her journey to art world stardom has never really been in doubt. At the age of just 7, Hollowell was given her first studio (a closet next to her dad’s studio) and was set up with her own easel and canvas! Growing up in the vast sun-baked farmlands of Northern Carolina created an early interplay between light and space. Being the daughter of two artists who cherished the value of light in their work meant that when the time came, Hollowell was one of those rare artists who emerged on the scene with a clear focus and a developed style. The artist’s work occupies a liminal space between figuration and abstraction, painting and sculpture. Hollowell explores the corporeal landscape from a deeply personal perspective, as she creates autobiographical abstract portraits of the often ineffable lived experiences of sexuality, pregnancy and birth. The artist further complicates the painting space by adding three dimensional elements to her work and blurring the lines between mediums. Calling on lessons from her youth, there is a careful balancing act at play between manufactured and real shadow, illusionary and real space, creating a magical interplay between natural and constructed imagery. We could honestly go on forever about Hollowel’s elegant self-portraits - she’s in a league of her own. These images don’t come close to doing her justice. No ifs or buts, you simply HAVE to see the works in person.
