In rich, thickly impastoed oil and acrylic paintings, Genieve Figgis updates art historical tropes and compositions with a macabre sense of humor. At first glance, the artist's vibrant landscapes, still lifes, and odalisques appear to exalt the luxury that pervades traditional painting, and Rococo art in particular. Yet Figgis makes bold, atmospheric brushstrokes and paints figures who appear more ghostly than human---choices which lend a more sinister, satirical vision to her canvases. Figgis received her MFA from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Brussels, Dublin, and Copenhagen. Her work belongs in the collections of the Smart Museum of Art, the X Museum, the Consortium Museum, and the Arts Council of Ireland, and has fetched six-figure prices on the secondary market.
