Chris Levine

BritishBritish
, b. 1960

Chris Levine’s multidisciplinary practice—which spans photography, performance, installation, fashion, music, and design—focuses on light and the shifting possibilities of perception. The U.K.-based artist is perhaps best known for his portraits of Queen Elizabeth, especially Lightness of Being (2004), which captures the monarch with her eyes closed. With this series and others, Levine has embraced a hallmark style: intimate, unguarded portrait photography presented in lightbox format. Levine studied at the Chelsea School of Art (now the Chelsea College of Arts) before receiving an MA in computer graphics from Central Saint Martins. He has exhibited in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Milan. His work has sold for six-figure prices on the secondary market.
