Chloe Wise

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1990

Riffing on consumer culture and social media trends, Chloe Wise creates paintings, videos, sculptures, and installations rooted in societal critique and self-deprecating humor. Wise gained widespread acclaim in 2014, when she started making her “Bread Bags” series of oil-painted, urethane castings of baguettes, bagels, and pancakes embellished with high-fashion designer logos. The project playfully considered associations of “breadwinning” and “dough” and the relationship between art and fashion. Since then, Wise has painted vibrant portraits of women and made sculptures that resemble food. Sex and consumption are frequent themes, and the artist is particularly interested in the framing and commodification of the female body. Wise has enjoyed solo shows in London, New York, Paris, Geneva, and Montreal, among other cities. She has also worked with a number of fashion brands. In 2019, she painted the spring/summer campaign images for Jacquemus and, the next year, collaborated on a 2020 collection with French label Études.
