Former Glaswegian shipyard welder Billy transitioned from his blue-collar roots to become a folk singer, comedian, and prolific film actor. His filmography spans over 50 movies, including notable works like "The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies" (2014), "Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events" (2004), and "The Last Samurai" (2003). In 2007, on a rainy day in Montreal, Canada, Billy's creative journey began unexpectedly. Seeking refuge from the rain, he stumbled into an art shop, emerging with art supplies that ignited his creative spark. His sketches and felt-tip drawings evolved over five years into his debut art collection, "Born On A Rainy Day," unveiled in 2012. Billy's creative process involves letting his drawings take shape naturally, naming them only after their essence becomes clear to him. His art, reminiscent of Aurignacian period cave paintings, features simplistic, faceless figures that exude self-awareness and relatability. This lack of emotion invites diverse interpretations and connection with viewers. Billy's artistic repertoire expanded with sculptures in 2020 and 2021. While influenced by artists like René Magritte and David Hockney, Billy's impact on the art world goes beyond his own creations. Glasgow honored the newly knighted Sir Billy Connolly with three towering murals for his 75th birthday, showcasing his iconic 'banana boots.' His legacy was further commemorated with LEGO® minifigures representing different career stages, with proceeds benefiting charity. After retiring from stand-up comedy, Billy starred in the ITV documentary "Billy Connolly: It's Been a Pleasure," expressing his art's significance. His accomplishments include a Lifetime Achievement Award and a best-selling autobiography, "Windswept & Interesting," accompanied by unique graphic artwork. Continuing his artistic journey, he released his eighth "Born On A Rainy Day" installment in March 2022.
