Anna Valdez's artistic journey began unexpectedly during an archaeological dig, where she started sketching to reinterpret spaces, maps, and lived experiences. With an academic background in archaeology and socio-cultural anthropology, she earned her MFA in painting in 2013. Valdez now explores various media, including painting, ceramics, printmaking, collage, and digital media. Her work delves into the concept of collective consciousness, reflecting on the traditions and visual symbols of different communities. "I am working on various narratives that investigate my own traditions and history through a visual format," she explains. Drawing inspiration from her memories, immediate surroundings, family photographs, recipes, and "vague stories," Valdez frequently incorporates recurring motifs such as patterned objects, masks, and veils into her pieces.
