Ana Benaroya

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1986

Born in 1986, from a young age the New Jerseyite was acutely aware of the prevailing stereotypes women face and has increasingly sought to dismantle them through her craft. After getting her BFA, she began her career as an illustrator where she learnt the importance of storytelling to her work. Feeling constrained, Ana wanted greater creative freedom to tell her own stories. This led to her transition into fine arts with an MFA in painting. She has not looked back since. Her rage at the patriarchal world she grew up in shines through her work. Ana unapologetically distorts the female body into muscular, traditionally masculine subjects. These subjects are free from cultural and social pressures to embrace imperfections and morph into their true selves. Having only begun in 2019, Ana’s mercurial rise to the top show’s no sign of slowing. Ana Benaroya: "Good music connects to your heart before your brain has a chance to catch up. That’s how I try to make my paintings."
